The California Association of Professional Scientists (CAPS) was formed in 1984 by a group of state scientists who believed their employment and professional interests were best served by an organization devoted strictly to the needs of state scientists.

Since 1984, CAPS has represented the state scientists' employment interests with management, the State Legislature and PERS. CAPS provides member services such as contract negotiations, grievance filing and arbitration, legal assistance to members, legislative advocacy, providing insurance benefits, etc.

CAPS also focuses on the professional interests of scientists. CAPS provides grants to its members to attend scientific conferences in other states when state funds are not available. CAPS also promotes science throughout the state. CAPS sponsors an annual State Scientist Day, which includes a wide variety of scientific exhibits erected at the awards to promising young scientists at regional science fairs, then selects Californiaâs ãOutstanding Young Scientistä from these regional winners.

CAPS counts among its members scientists in a wide variety of disciplines. These include lab scientists responsible for recognizing and preventing the spread of disease in humans, animals and agricultural products; biologists who help evaluate and sustain our plant, animal and marine resources; seismic and geologic specialists who measure and analyze Californiaâs considerable seismic activity; energy specialists who continue to research and apply creative new ways to save energy through the use of alternative energy sources; industrial hygienists who help enforce workplace safety; toxic specialists who police and help clean up toxic dump sites; and many others.

CAPS is committed to maintaining and improving the quality of life in California. It helps accomplish this by supporting the integrity and quality of scientific research in California state service through the use of rigorous entry and promotional standards, competitive salaries and benefits, and a strong program for professional growth.
